A traditional Portuguese Caramujos pendant with floral motifs, made of blue enamel. Typical of the south of Portugal.
Caramujos are sea mollusks with a hard and durable shell. Many people have used mollusc shells to create jewelry since ancient times. Portugal is no exception. The tradition of creating Caramujos jewelry goes back to the distant past of Portugal.
Using enamel to add new colors to jewelry is an ancient practice used by Portuguese jewelers since the time of the Roman Empire. The decoration technique involves alloying metal with a very thin layer of colored glass.
The floral pattern is reminiscent of traditional Portuguese Azulejo tiles.
Handmade.
The jewelry is made in Gondomar (Portugal), the jewelry capital of Portugal.
