Ten years ago, in May 2016, Portugal issued a 2-euro commemorative coin dedicated to the participation of the Portuguese national team in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
The coin depicts an iconic piece of Portuguese jewelry—the filigree heart of Viana—which serves as a symbol of love and sincerity. The coin’s design is based on a well-known work by Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos, titled *Coração Independente* ("Independent Heart"), and symbolizes the unity of the Portuguese people in supporting their athletes.
