In 2024, the jewelry store "Joalharia do Carmo" celebrated its 100th anniversary.
The Joalharia do Carmo store is located in the heart of Lisbon.
The 1755 earthquake in Lisbon reduced the city to ruins. During excavations at the beginning of the 20th century, several premises suitable for commerce were discovered in the wall of the former Carmo monastery. One of the stores that opened there was the jewelry store Ourivesaria Raul Pereira e Cia.
Trade developed slowly and in the second half of the 1920s, owner Raul Pereira sold his shop to Porto jeweler Alfredo Pinto da Cunha. From then on the store got its name "Joalharia do Carmo".
In 1925, architect Manuel Norte Júnior designed the building's iconic façade, which remains unchanged to this day.
The façade of the building is designed in Art Deco style. The style well conveys the spirit of the time in which the store was built.
The facade inspired the concept of the space.
The design and furniture in the store have been kept original: chests of drawers with mirrors, Baccarat crystal chandeliers, spiral staircases and shades of green and gold. Filigree is the protagonist of a carefully thought-out concept.
Trade gradually developed. The active period occurred during the Second World War. Portugal was flooded with refugees who brought their jewelry to the shops. Then, for decades, the Joalharia do Carmo store remained a favorite place for purchasing wedding gifts and orders for the purchase of silverware.
The jewelry store "Joalharia do Carmo" remained in the same family until 2020.
Throughout the history of Portugal, traditional trade has played an important role in the life of cities and towns, defining the characteristic features and cultural characteristics of each city and its inhabitants. The Trading with History program aims to preserve, develop and support such economic activities.
Today, the Joalharia do Carmo store has retained its identity. The focus remains on certified Portuguese products, Portuguese filigree. The Lisbon City Council has listed the Joalharia do Carmo store as "Comércio com História" (Trade with History).
