Filigree products (as in all objects of art and luxury) use alloys.

In Portugal, the percentage of gold in the alloy per kilogram is 800 g for pure gold (80%) and 200 g for the rest of the alloy (20%). This is known as 19.2 carat gold. There are also cases where the percentage of gold in the alloy is 75% by 25% (the so-called 18-karat gold).

In silver filigree products, the alloy for the casting wire is composed of silver and copper in the proportion of 95% silver and 5% copper, and in the design and execution of the frame or frame, silver alloy in the proportion of 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper can be used.

The thickness of the silver wire used in filigree work should be no more than 0.22 mm.

The manufacturer is the first to place his mark on a product made of precious metal. The mark serves to identify the organization responsible for bringing the product to the market. Then the assay office puts a sign - Marca de Contrastaria (Casa da Moeda).

Only marked products containing precious metals may be sold to the public.

Exempt from marking:
  • gold and platinum products with a total weight of 0.5 g or less.
  • silver products with a total weight of 2 g or less.

If the product consists of silver and gold or silver and platinum, products with a total weight of 0.5 g or less are exempt from marking.
