Jewelry capital of Portugal
Gondomar is a town in the Porto region. An area known for its goldsmithing since pre-Roman times. Much of the history of Gondomar is the story of the relationship between man and gold.
It is Gondomar that is recognized as the jewelry capital of Portugal.

The jewelry manufacturing sector accounts for 35% of the total industry in the municipality of Gondomar. The sector's annual income is approximately 50 million euros. More than 800 people work in the jewelry business.

The municipality of Gondomar launched its own brand, Gondomar Original Jewellery, in April 2023. This is a certification mark that will now identify products manufactured in this region.
The mark of authenticity of the brand is placed exclusively on jewelry products created by Gondomar craftsmen.
The purpose of creating the sign is to preserve the heritage of jewelers passed on from generation to generation.

Filigree is the main focus of Gondomar jewelry.
This handmade work is carried out in small workshops owned by the same family, using techniques passed down from generation to generation.

In 1984, CINDOR, the Center for Professional Training of Jewelers and Watchmakers, was opened in Gondomar.

In the city of Gondomar, an Industrial Park for Jewelers has been created, integrated into the Technology Center for Jewelers, which is currently called Goldpark.

At the White House of Gramido (Casa Branca de Gramido) in Gondomar, above the Douro River, the Municipal Filigree Museum opened on May 20, 2022. The museum has many interesting exhibits. The exhibition was assembled by local hereditary jewelers: utensils, tools, technical devices, furniture. Here is the famous filigree dress that was exhibited in the Portugal pavilion at Expo 2020 in Dubai.

Museu Municipal da Filigrana de Gondomar

The excursion “Filigree Route” - Rota da Filigrana - begins with a visit to the museum. The route passes through jewelry workshops, where you can see with your own eyes how a work of jewelry art is born.

The municipality of Gondomar submitted an application in the summer of 2023 to include filigree in the UNESCO list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
